The University of New South Wales undertakes research and provides training in Occupational Health and Safety, through the schools within the Faculty of Science including the School of Safety Science, Department of Aviation, and the School of Optometry and Vision Science, the Injury and Risk Management Research Centre (IRMRC), the UNSW @ ADFA and its own Risk Management Unit. In addition, NSG through its capacity as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) has developed an entry level OHS course which provides an accreditation pathway to the University level qualifications.
The School of Safety Science
The School of Safety Science at UNSW is part of the Faculty of Science. The School undertakes research and provides programs in areas related to Occupational and Health Safety, Ergonomics, and Environmental studies. The School has ten full time academic staff who are specialists in Safety Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Chemical Safety and Toxicology, Ergonomics, Human Behaviour and Risk Management. Experts in other specialist areas, such as Occupational Health and Safety Law, are associated with the School and teach in the coursework programs. Specific interests and projects include impact biomechanics, decision making under uncertainty, violence and bullying in the workplace, fire and explosion modelling, risk modelling in general, impact biomechanics musculoskeletal injury, sports injury, human error, ergonomics of complex systems, toxicity of mixtures, skin penetration.
Injury Risk Management Research Centre
The New South Wales (NSW) Injury Risk Management Research Centre (IRMRC) is an independent research centre of UNSW. It has strong collaborative and administrative links to the UNSW Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Science. It employs researchers and staff necessary to achieve its goals and to develop innovative approaches to the management of injury risk in NSW. Its funding partners are NSW Health, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), the Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) and the UNSW. The IRMRC offers cutting-edge research and quality consultancy, as well as world class database management providing significant added-value to injury databases. The IRMRC is the premier research centre recognised as a source of information on risk management in Australia. The IRMRC has 14 research staff working on injury and occupational disease prevention including epidemiological studies, health surveillance and on sports injury and road traffic injury.
